HP ProDesk 400 G6 Mini in a 10-inch rack
How the HP ProDesk 400 G6 Mini fits a 10-inch rack: 10th Gen T-series CPUs, up to 64 GB RAM, 1U on the HP mount or 2U on the hex shelf.

On this page
The HP ProDesk 400 G6 Mini is the newest of the three HP minis in the catalogue: 10th Gen Intel T-series CPUs, two SO-DIMM slots for up to 64 GB, an M.2 SSD and a 2.5-inch bay. It is the HP to pick when you want the most recent CPU generation in a small, low-idle box for a homelab node.
At a glance
| Processor | 10th Gen Core or Pentium Gold T-series (35 W max), up to Core i7-10700T (8 cores / 16 threads, up to 4.5 GHz); configurable |
| Memory | 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM, up to 64 GB (2 × 32 GB) |
| Storage | One M.2 PCIe x4 2280 SSD plus a 2.5-inch SATA bay (needs the DM SATA drive bracket) |
| Networking | One Gigabit RJ45 (Intel I219-LM) at the rear |
| Front USB | USB-C 10 Gbps, USB-A 10 Gbps, USB-A 5 Gbps |
| Power | External 65 W or 90 W adapter, 19.5 V DC; 4.52 W short idle in HP’s ENERGY STAR test |
| Size | 177 × 175 × 34.2 mm, 1.25 kg |
Where it fits in a mini rack
As a Proxmox or general virtualization host, the 400 G6 offers up to 8 cores / 16 threads with the Core i7-10700T, two SO-DIMM slots for 64 GB, and an M.2 SSD with a 2.5-inch bay beside it, so the hypervisor and the VM storage can sit on separate disks. Memory runs at up to 2666 MT/s on Core i5 and below, or 2933 MT/s with the Core i7.
The documented 4.52 W short idle also makes it a fair always-on box for containers: DNS filtering, Home Assistant, a reverse proxy or a media server. Treat that figure as HP’s typical configuration in a standard test, not a promise for yours.
Check one detail before you buy a second drive: the 2.5-inch bay needs HP’s DM SATA drive bracket, so check that your unit has one.
What it is not: a fast-network machine. It has one Gigabit port, and the only expansion HP lists is an M.2 slot for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth card. It is not a NAS either, with room for two drives in total.
How it fits a 10-inch rack
The configurator checks each placement against every rack in the catalogue:
The community HP Mini PC mount holds it in 1U at 185 mm deep and fits all six RackMate frames. In the 200 mm-deep T0 and T1 that leaves little space behind the chassis for the rear plugs, so the 260 mm frames are more comfortable for cabling.
The same mount is listed for the ProDesk 600 G5 and 600 G2, so one design covers all three HP minis.
On the 10i hex shelf the catalogue uses source CAD dimensions, and on the 6 mm hex shelf that works out to 2U lying flat, at 186 mm deep. Standing upright it needs 5U, which rules out the four-unit T0 and T0 Plus. If rack height is tight, the mount is the more compact option.
Power
The catalogue uses the 65 W adapter as the high planning figure. That is the adapter’s documented output capacity, not measured draw, and it leaves out adapter losses. HP also offers a 90 W adapter for this model, so if yours came with one, budget for that instead. There is no measured low figure in the power profile; the only documented idle number is the 4.52 W short idle from HP’s ENERGY STAR test at 115 V AC.
The CPU options are capped at 35 W on the Desktop Mini, which keeps this a modest load on a shared power strip. Plan one external adapter per machine and a place for it at the back of the rack.
Networking and cabling
The single Gigabit RJ45 on the Intel I219-LM faces the rear. Patch it to a rear keystone in the same rack, and never route the cable around the frame to the front.
The front USB ports cover boot media and quick maintenance. The rear adds two USB-A 5 Gbps and two USB-A 480 Mbps for peripherals. The optional Wi-Fi card is an Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 or a Realtek 802.11ac part, but in a rack you will want the wire.
How it differs from the other HP minis
All three HP minis share the HP Mini PC mount and a single rear Gigabit port. The differences:
| ProDesk 400 G6 | ProDesk 600 G5 | ProDesk 600 G2 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU ceiling | Core i7-10700T, 8 cores / 16 threads | Core i9-9900T, 8 cores / 16 threads | Core i7-6700T, 4 cores / 8 threads |
| Max RAM | 64 GB | 64 GB | 32 GB |
| Storage | One M.2 PCIe x4 + 2.5-inch bay | Two M.2 PCIe x4 + 2.5-inch bay | One M.2 PCIe x4 + 2.5-inch bay |
| Short idle (ENERGY STAR) | 4.52 W | 3.34 W | 11.91 W |
| Hex shelf, flat | 2U | 1U | 2U |
Choose the 400 G6 for the newest CPU generation. The 600 G5 takes a second M.2 SSD and sits flat on the shelf in 1U, and the 600 G2 is the oldest and has the lowest memory ceiling.
