Minisforum MS-A2 in a 10-inch rack

How the Minisforum MS-A2 fits a 10-inch rack: a 16-core Ryzen 9 9955HX, two 10G SFP+ cages, two 2.5 GbE ports and 2U flat on the hex shelf.

The Minisforum MS-A2 is the AMD version of the MS-01 idea: the same compact enclosure with two 10G SFP+ cages and two 2.5 GbE ports at the back, now around a 16-core Ryzen 9 9955HX with room for up to 96 GB of DDR5. It suits anyone who wants a high core count behind a 10G link in a 10-inch rack.

Where it fits in a mini rack

Read from the spec sheet, the MS-A2 is a virtualization host first. A Proxmox node gets 16 cores / 32 threads to divide between guests, up to 96 GB of memory, three M.2 SSDs for boot and mirrored VM storage, and a U.2 option through the included adapter. The four network ports split the same way as on the MS-01: SFP+ for storage traffic or a 10G uplink, 2.5 GbE for management and VM networks.

The low-profile PCIe slot is there for an extra network card, an HBA or a low-profile GPU, as long as the card fits the chassis. One of the community builds below is a local AI lab.

Check one detail before you pick an operating system: the two RJ45 ports use different controllers, an Intel i226-V and a Realtek RTL8125. Make sure your hypervisor or firewall OS supports both.

What it is not: a small or low-power box. Its 19.3 W measured idle is above the MS-01’s 16.1 W, and it fills the hex shelf to the edge of its overhang allowance.

Configurator check against each catalogue rack, not a physical-fit certification. Depth uses the catalogue model; confirm cable clearance and your hardware revision.

There is no dedicated MS-A2 mount in the catalogue, so the 10i hex shelf carries it. It shares the MS-01’s 189 × 195.6 × 48 mm enclosure, so it sits flat on the 150 mm shelf deck with 45.6 mm of rear overhang, within the 46 mm the shelf allows. That takes 2U including the deck, at 200 mm deep, and fits all six RackMate frames.

In the 200 mm-deep T0 and T1 the machine uses the full depth of the frame, so the rear connectors end up at the very back. The 260 mm frames give the DAC cables and power plug room to bend. Standing upright it needs 5U, which rules out the four-unit T0 and T0 Plus.

Power

The catalogue plans this machine between 19.3 W and 149.3 W. Both figures are from Notebookcheck’s measurements of the Ryzen 9 9955HX with 32 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD: 19.3 W average idle, within a 16.1–21.7 W range, 64.9 W average under load and 149.3 W peak. CPU, RAM, storage and expansion cards change consumption, so a PCIe card adds to the peak.

The 240 W adapter is not the device draw. Budget the measured peak plus any card for the power strip or UPS, and plan a place for the large external adapter at the back of the rack.

Networking and cabling

All four network ports face the rear. Patch the two 2.5 GbE RJ45 ports to rear keystones in the same rack, and never route a cable around the frame to reach the front.

The two SFP+ cages take DAC cables or optical modules. Keep the other end at the rear too, on a switch or host whose SFP+ cages you can reach from the back, rather than wrapping a DAC around the side of the frame.

The front panel has a power key, a headset jack, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 and one USB 2.0, so a boot stick and a keyboard stay within reach.

The rear USB-C ports run at 10 Gbps with DisplayPort alt mode and are not USB4, unlike the MS-01’s. Thunderbolt or USB4 networking between hosts is not an option here.

How it differs from the MS-01

The two share an enclosure, the network layout and the shelf fit, so the choice comes down to the internals:

MS-A2 MS-01
CPU AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX, 16 cores / 32 threads Intel Core i9-13900H, i9-12900H or i5-12600H
Memory 2 × DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM, up to 96 GB 2 × DDR5 SO-DIMM
Graphics AMD Radeon 610M Intel Iris Xe (UHD with one SO-DIMM)
USB-C 2 × USB-C 10 Gbps, no USB4 2 × USB4
PCIe Low-profile PCIe ×16 slot PCIe 4.0 ×16 physical, ×8 link
Measured idle / peak 19.3 W / 149.3 W 16.1 W / 123.3 W
Adapter 240 W 180 W

The MS-A2 trades USB4 and a little idle efficiency for the 16-core Ryzen and the documented 96 GB memory ceiling.
